Encephalitis
Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain, usually caused by a virus. It is a very rare disease that mainly affects children, older people, and individuals with severely compromised immune systems. Viral encephalitis, or any other type of encephalitis, can be mild or severe.
Encephalitis symptoms of the milder version of the disease include headache, fever, loss of appetite, malaise and fatigue. When encephalitis is more severe, the fever is higher and a number of other symptoms may present themselves; these include nausea and vomiting, confusion, stiff neck, personality changes, disorientation, seizures, hallucinations, hearing or speech problems, drowsiness, memory loss or even coma.
Encephalitis is actually a general term used to refer to a variety of diseases that affect the central nervous system (in this case, the brain). There could be many types and causes of encephalitis. One of the most common types of this condition is herpes encephalitis; Herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis is caused by the herpes simplex virus and is extremely dangerous, causing death in a large part of newborns and in some older individuals that contract it. On the positive side, this type of encephalitis is very rare.
